mHI makes public statement at FCC/FDA meeting
At its first joint public meeting, July 26-27, 2010, the heads of Fwederal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to work together to support the mHealth community. During  the two-day meeting, many of the benefits of mHealth were described and some of the hurdles addressed.

In the public statement session, mHealth Initiative representative C. Peter Waegemann urged the FDA to minimize the current threat of healthcare communication regulation that is keeping developers from working on innovative solutions and some investors from funding new companies. He also encouraged the FCC to help the mHealth community to grow and brings its benefits to healthcare, patients, and clinicians. He proposed that the FCC become the conductor of an orchestra of mHealth stakeholders to solve outstanding issues such as interstate licensing, guidelines for medical grade email and texting. He urged them to work with the international community to overcome these and other hurdles.

In early July 2010, some 60 representatives fro Asia and the Pacific Rim attended the first Mobile Health Asia Summit. For the first time, healthcare IT experts gathered there to explore mHealth opportunities for infrastructure-challenged regions as well as for some of the medical centers and advanced healthcare systems, including Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, and Australia. mHealth Initiative representative Peter Waegemann served as conference chair. 

Kaiser Permanente finds use of secure e-mail between patients and physicians improves quality of care scores.  “Kaiser Permanente members using My Health Manager send more than 870,000 secure messages to their clinicians each month,” said Terhilda Garrido, co-author of the study and vice president, health information technology transformation and analytics, Kaiser Permanente. “Physicians are using the tool to connect with their patients like never before, sending nearly 3.5 million messages to patients between January and April this year, and empowering them to take better care of themselves and manage their total health.”
